During the first lecture of Digital Revolution, Prof. Cutting covered a variety of topics. These included the course syllabus, Chat GPT-4, and the web management system called WordPress. I found it interesting that this course was the only college level class that encouraged the use of computer aided responses. In prior classes, professors would often frown upon using websites such as Chat GPT, WIX, and OpenAI. In my experience, professors would provide no credit for students using AI. In addition, Prof. Cutting displayed how despite being able to create a quick generic response, Chat GPT-3.5 did not do a good job recognizing certain prompts. I believe in the near future that AI algorithms will be able to recognize almost any question and provided a clear concise explanation.
Furthermore, I don’t think Chat GPT should be readily used in the classroom, specifically for an engineer degree. By using Chat GPT for homework or projects, it dilutes the student’s education. By using an AI tool that provides the answer for every question undermines the need for an education. The excessive use of AI will negatively affect students, as they will not fully understand the theory behind the solution. For example, civil engineers who are in charge of building large scale infrastructure, such as bridges and skyscrapers should not be reliant on an AI tool. This directly goes against the engineering code of ethics, specifically the second fundamental cannon. By using AI, an engineer would be performing services outside of their area of competence, as they are reliant on the generated solution.
